5th Medical Camp At Masai Mara Triangle Conservancy
Fifth Medical Camp in the Masai Mara from 26 to 27 May 2018
Our fifth medical camp was a success – this was not clear four weeks ago.
The premises where the medical camp was to take place, – Iltolish Primary School – in the heart of the Masai Mara, were nearly destroyed on 13 April. A heavy storm caused great damage to the roofs and buildings, forcing the school to close.
Thanks to the quick and generous donations from Gauff Consultants (Dieter Gauff), Cargo Human Care e.V. (including direct donation from 2 CHC members), Mara Siria Tented Camp and Phoenix Safaris, the damage to the school buildings, primarily the roofs, could be repaired within 3 weeks.
Thus, the fifth Medical Camp could take place as scheduled on 26 and 27 May 2018 in the classrooms of the Iltolish School.
Dr. Thomas Berger as pediatrician and Dr. Med. Melanie Bödemann as an ophthalmologist performed the treatments. They were assisted by David (Local Medical Officer) and Milly, a nurse from the Cargo Human Care Medical Center. Emmanuel, a staff member of Mara Siria Tented Camp, helped with the organization and translation.
In total, 148 patients were examined and treated for general, pediatric and ophthalmological purposes on the two days. Common complaints were upper respiratory infections and back pain. Ophthalmological patients with short-sightedness could be treated with prescription eyeglasses and patients with farsightedness with reading glasses.
The financial and logistical challenges of the fifth Medical Camp were taken over again by the companies Gauff Consultants (flights from Nairobi to the Masai Mara), Phoenix Safaris (transport on site) and the Mara Siria Tented Camp (accommodation, meals).
