Medical Field Camp in the Masai Mara

A cooperation between CHC, Gauff Ingenieure, Phoenix Safaris and Mara Siria Luxury Tented Camp

The first CHC-Medical Field Camp in the Masai Mara took place on 23 and 24 April at the Iltolish Mara Primary School. This location is bordering the Masai Mara Natural Game Reserve famous for its abundant wildlife but especially for its Great Migration when a million of zebras and wildebeests are crossing the Mara River from July to October each year.

The population within the Kimitet area where the Iltolish Mara Primary School is located is home to some 2,000 Masai people mainly living from traditional livestock farming (cattle, goats, sheep).  Immediate medical care is not available within this area and the nearest hospital is in Narok about 80km away.  The demand for basic medical care is high and therefore the news about the upcoming free medical camp were spreading very fast.

Dr. Magdalene Budach and Dr. Thomas Berger from CHC’s Medical Doctors Team assisted by Mr. Leteipa David Olekute a local Medical Officer examined a total of 166 patients with an age ranging from 3 months to 88 years.

The doctors observed that all patients were in general of good health.  So called “civilization diseases” like hypertension, diabetes or obesity which are observed more and more frequently in urban areas like Nairobi were not present during the examinations. The doctors diagnosed mainly skin diseases, joint pains and respiratory ailments.

However, a three-year-old boy complaining of general weakness and always short of breath could suffer from a potential heart disease, which needs urgent and further attention. The CHC doctors talked to the parents of the boy and it was agreed that CHC would organize and facilitate that the boy can undergo a special heart examination at the Mater Hospital in Nairobi within the next days.

At the completion of a very successful two days Medical Field Camp it was concluded that this venture shall be repeated again this year.
