Mara Siria Camp has been committed to sustainable tourism, conservation and supporting local communities in the Masai Mara for many years. One of the camp’s most meaningful long-term initiatives is its partnership with Mara Itolish Primary School near the Oloololo Escarpment.
For more than 15 years, this collaboration has helped improve access to education, strengthen community development and create new opportunities for children and families in the region.
The Story Behind the Partnership
Mara Itolish Primary School serves children from surrounding communities in the Masai Mara and plays an important role in local education. The partnership with Mara Siria Camp began with a simple but meaningful goal: supporting the local community while helping reduce human-wildlife conflict through sustainable development.
From the beginning, education was seen as a key driver of long-term change. By improving learning opportunities and creating future prospects for young people, the initiative contributes to both community wellbeing and conservation efforts in the region.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the camp also supported the school and surrounding families with humanitarian assistance.
Conservation & Environmental Education
Students actively learn about wildlife conservation, waste management and sustainable resource use. Conservation clubs at the school participate in tree planting and environmental awareness initiatives.
Community Empowerment
The partnership also supports alternative income opportunities such as traditional beadwork, helping families reduce dependence on farming activities in wildlife areas.
Students are further introduced to career opportunities in conservation, guiding and hospitality, highlighting the importance of protecting the region’s unique ecosystem

Success Stories
The long-term impact of the partnership can be seen through the achievements of former students. One example is Moses Tumpes, who successfully completed his studies at Mount Kenya University with support from Mara Siria Camp throughout his educational journey.
Many other students continue to benefit from improved learning conditions, scholarships and access to healthcare through the school clinic. Solar power has also significantly improved both classroom conditions and medical services.
